Volunteer Position: Maintenance Helper

Location: Carty House (two locations)
Time Commitment: Flexible, as needed

Overview:

The Maintenance Helper volunteer assists Carty House with general maintenance tasks across both locations. This role is essential in keeping our houses safe, functional, and welcoming for the residents. The volunteer works closely with staff to address minor repairs, general upkeep, and maintenance-related projects.

This role is ideal for someone with maintenance skills who enjoys practical work and problem-solving. You will only be asked to perform tasks within your skillset and comfort zone. If any task is beyond your ability, you are encouraged to decline and focus on other areas where you feel more comfortable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with minor repairs, including fixing furniture, doors, shelves, and other household items.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, unclogging drains and sinks, and patching small wall damage using basic tools.
  • Tighten door knobs and locks, adjust or install hinges, and assemble new furniture or appliances.
  • Replace taps and repair dripping faucets.
  • Support staff in identifying and reporting larger repair needs or issues requiring professional attention.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Must have access to personal tools.
  • Experience with basic repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to work independently, lift and carry light to moderate loads.
  • Reliability and a positive, helpful attitude.
  • Respect for diversity and sensitivity to the experiences of refugee women.
