Each year, on June 20, the world honours the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home countries to escape conflict or persecution.

In Canada, World Refugee Day 2026 arrives amid ongoing debate following the recent passage of Bill C-12 (Strengthening Canada’s Immigration System and Borders Act). The legislation imposes stricter limits and shorter timeframes for making refugee claims. Analysis here from Connecting Ottawa.

  1. Sign CCR’s open letter to Prime Minister Carney, encouraging him to uphold Canadian values that welcome refugees. We know we are stronger when we stand together!
  2. Share your thoughts on Canada’s immigration levels. The federal government is seeking public input on the number of newcomers Canada should welcome between 2027 and 2029. The government has already reduced the number of refugees it originally planned to welcome in 2026 by 32% compared to the targets announced in late 2023. This survey is our chance to let your voice be heard! The government’s consultation survey is open until June 30.
  3. Contact your MP about refugee health care and settlement issues.
  4. Make a gift to Carty House! We journey with refugee women every single day, ensuring they have the resources and support they need to rebuild their lives in Canada. We would be honoured if your recognition of World Refugee Day included a gift to support our vulnerable residents.

Just this week at Carty House, we celebrated a big milestone with one of our residents! After a lot of hard work, she completed her studies at Carrefour, earning her GED and completing their Administration Program. Her housemates joined her at the graduation ceremony, and everyone at Carty House is so incredibly proud of her!
